Presentation:
One of the tedious work when you design a site of ecommerce is that for a photo of a product you must resize it and decline in different sizes. The software will then use this image size for thumbnail display, another for displaying large.
We shall see in the various notes on this subject, how to optimize the insertion of a picture on your ecommerce software and we will compare the advantages and disadvantages in Prestashop and Magento.
Plan steps:
- How to prepare, optimize your images before inserting into your shop ecommerce
- Using Xnview to optimize your photos for inclusion in your shop ecommerce
- How to use Gimp to optimize your photos for inclusion in your shop ecommerce
- Insert your photos into a sheet product in Prestashop
- Insert your photos into a sheet product in Magento
- Conclusion
We shall see below how to optimize the insertion of a picture on your ecommerce software.
How to prepare your photos before inserting into your ecommerce store:
An interesting feature of Prestashop is that you just insert an image larger than 600 x 600 pixels and the software automatically generates the various sizes of photographs he uses. This feature greatly facilitates the insertion of an image for a product, knowing that we always advise you to use several photos taken from different angles for the same product.
To Magento you must provide three sizes of photos to a photo (75 x 75 135 x 135 600 x 600 pixels).
To insert photos into a sheet product from your store you can:
- Either get your suppliers
- Or call in a professional (this is often comparable to previous)
- Either make it yourself with your digital camera
Note the choice of a photo is not trivial, a photo and it missed 60% of product sales less.
Allow several photo for the same product (snuff different angles, with optional extensions of one or more details, location ...). This will allow your client to get a clearer picture of your product. A client who has reassured and can not or questions will be more inclined to buy your product.
It is best to start by check with your provider if you can provide photographs of your product, ask her permission to use on your website. You will have professional quality photographs and they do nothing will cost.
If your supplier can not provide you with these pictures and you have the money to pay the services of a professional, I recommend you choose this option. Indeed it is not easy to develop a product and make good pictures takes a lot of time.
Finally, if the 2 previous solutions are not feasible for you, you have a digital camera and you have plenty of time available, you can start in the photography of your products.
You will in this case use a mini photo studio, for a presentation of these, you can read the following article:

Beautiful pictures for ecommerce sites
You are now in Possession of a number of photographs for all of your products, but used as such these pictures are unusable for your ecommerce site, because they have too many important features for displaying your shop, such as:
- The weight (over 100 kb)
- The size (greater than 600 x 600 pixels)
- The resolution (greater than 72 dpi)
We shall see in a future ticket, how to use editing software image to fit your images to display in your shop on the Internet and thus accelerate the speed display on your pages.
For me 3 software lets you do just this for a low cost:
- Gimp: Free Software and therefore free, originally developed for Linux and Windows are now. I advise you to install the Gimp Mode (easier to install) you can download here
- XnView: developed by Pierre-Emmanuel Gougelet you can download here (26 € at the time of this post).
- Photofiltre: you can download here (20 € at the time of this post).
Note that these last 2 products are free for non-commercial use.
Photofiltre Xnview and are easier to install and use, XnView has more parameters and automation also allows you to get higher compression.
Gimp is more complicated to install and use, but it is much more comprehensive and enjoys the support of a very important community.
The use of automatic conversion of your images are very similar in XnView and Photofiltre, I'll introduce in my next letter how do this in Xnview and the next in Gimp.
