We saw in our previous post , it was necessary to rework your photographs to get a quick loading of pages on your site ecommerce and thus navigation is more fluid. We also saw how to use the software to do this Xnview.
So we will even here, how rework your images to have a quick loading of your pages by using the free and free to use: Gimp. You can download a version optimized and Frenchified software (click download).
Having downloaded and installed Gimp, we will get a PhotoLabo utility, which allows for resizing for a set of images: FileResize .
Download the file: Fileresize Fileresize 7zip or tar.gz, extract it.
Then copy the file: photolab_fileresize.py in the Plug-ins folder of your GIMP software (C: Program FilesGimp Modelibgimp2.0plug pack-ins).
Start your Gimp.
To start the automatic resizing of a set of pictures, go to the window box Tools menu: Xtns -> PhotoLab -> Resize Images

Select the folder containing your photos to resize and to have the maximum size for the width or height and click OK:

Gimp will create a folder in your file Scaled photo and insert it will resize the photos.
Note for users of Magento :
I advise you to rename the directory each time depending on the size you selected (three image sizes are required for Magento), eg Base600 × 600. Enabling you when inserting directly in Magento to know which photo you insert.
Testing the gain obtained:
To give you an idea of the gain you can expect from this operation, we will use the same photo for Xnview:

We get a picture of 855 x 2304 pixels and a resolution of 230 dpi, which gives us a file with a size of 717 kb.
After passing through the conversion system FileResize, we obtain an image of 222 x 600 pixels, which gives us a file with a size of 11.7 kb.
Conclusion:
- With Gimp, the reduction is somewhat larger than Xnview (11.7 kb instead of 14 kb).
- For display on an ecommerce site the difference between an image before and after resizing is not or hardly visible.
- The gain in display time is very important when multiple images are used for product display your ecommerce.

thank you
The first 717 KB is crude and the second 11.7 kb is optimized, for against these figures are only one example to give you an idea of the cuts that you can get, because a lot of parameters between a factor in the compression.
In fact one of the interesting points of the extension is to deal directly Fileresize a set of images, it is not necessary to treat them one by one.
If you need clarification, feel free to post your questions.
The weight you give are those gross, or those optimized for the web?
This feature in GIMP, and very very well done, and very powerful, weight reduction can cheerfully to 50% over a conventional export PNG or JPG.
Its disadvantage and it is tedious to do this treatment frame.
Hello;
Very good articles.
Personally (especially with artisans), rather I use FastStone Image Viewer (free for personal use and cheap to use pro) which can process and batch rename (size, compression quality jpg, retouching, logo, copyright ...): http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
Bravo for your site.
