1.3 The Pages CMS

Magento CMS has features quite simple, the advantage is that you can control every element of every page you create.

Once your pages have content worthy of being listed, give your page a unique title (SEF URL Identifier).

Go to the tab "Meta Data" and write a description for each CMS page that you want to reference.

You can leave the field "Keywords" empty, it is used by search engines, when the description field is empty.

But against the latter, do not leave it empty! Keep in mind that the purpose of description is to encourage people to click on the link to your site!

Do not try to take a shortcut by using modules of automatic generation of META description, this would amount to a result close to nil.

1.4 Optimizing Content for SEO

Magento offers the possibility to add the URL of the product category names.

But this feature is not always very well supported by the system of e-commerce , and it generates duplicate content. In addition, instead of having a beneficial effect on your SEO, it will have the opposite effect, so we will disable it. To do this go into "System => Configuration => Catalog => optimization for search engines."

Disable the "Use the path in URLs product".

Now, you must optimize each category, go to "Catalog => Manage Categories".

The most important fields are:

  • "Meta Description": Write a short description attractive, with your class. As we have already said several times previously, always keep in mind that this description is that your prospective buyers will see in the search engines. If it does not attract them, they will not click on it. Also avoid descriptions, more and more frequent, relevant to the price (discount, cheap ...). This is not necessarily that it will convince someone to come home, because now most sites use this method. Your prospective buyers will prefer to have details of the category, to be sure this is good.
  • "Page Title": If you change this field, the title of the category page will exactly match the change. If you leave it blank, the title of the category page will be the name of the category with the category names parents.
  • "URL Key": Try to ensure that the URL of your class is short but "rich" as keywords.

Try removing unnecessary words like "the, of, for ...".

So do not type urls: Shirts for men in black. Write instead: black-men-shirts.

If you use Magento for multiple stores (multi-stores), you can change the name, description, title, and meta tags for each page.

It is also very useful to optimize your SEO, if you have a multi-language shop.

1.5 Optimizing products

Referencing pages produced conventionally

There needs to be optimized each product pages in the same manner as for classes.

You can set up meta tags for each store (View Store) and the shop default (Default Values).

Note that you will return to the "Meta Title", replace the full title of the product page (including categories).

Referencing product pages with images

One side is too often forgotten for SEO is to think to use the images.

You can often get substantial traffic from searches for images.

This requires that you thought to name "complete and detailed" for your images.

Avoid names and images P1239000CA.jpg type, choose keywords separated by hyphens and indented, human-type shirt-1.jpg.

Also remember to always refer to the tag "alt" for images.

This tag is very important for two reasons:

  • The first is that you optimize your SEO, spam, know what are the images that they index.
  • The second is that you allow people not displaying images, an indication of having them in the pages they read.

By default, Magento will replace the image names, the tag "alt" tags and "title" (for displaying a legend when the mouse passes over it) by the product title.

This is already good, but you can optimize it, with a little effort.

In the "Images" information products, you can define the label for each image of your products. This value will replace the tag "alt" and "title", and you can do this for each of your stores.

That's the end of our second part on "how to improve the SEO of your Magento store." Soon we'll look how to improve the theme of your e-commerce.
